Hydrogen Peroxide Treatment

Traitement au Peroxyde d'hydrogène

Hydrogen peroxide is more commonly known as "oxygenated water"... It's a liquid form of active oxygen. And it's not just for bleaching hair! It's a powerful oxidant widely used to rid pools of impurities and algae, and it can be used as a regular treatment or as a shock treatment.

In a 35% concentrated liquid solution (food grade), it releases 130 liters of active oxygen per liter.

The dosage of your hydrogen peroxide treatment and its effectiveness depends on many factors, such as the concentration of the product, the pH, the temperature of your water, and the amount of algae and impurities you want to combat.

Hydrogen peroxide treatment has many advantages:

  • First, it is compatible with chlorine and bromine and can be used as a complementary treatment on existing algae. It is a miracle product for fixing a green pool.
  • It offers an effective alternative to chlorine shock treatments. Swimming can be resumed quickly after a shock treatment (on average 4 hours). The problem with shock chlorine is that it adds stabilizer to your pool water, with all the problems that entails. Therefore, if necessary, it's more advisable to use an active oxygen treatment, which is much easier to dose.
  • Its effect on microorganisms and algae spores is immediate.
  • It is compatible with all pool coatings. Its significant oxidizing action is also suitable for pools with reinforced polyester coatings when it is necessary to act on marbled stains, a common phenomenon caused by micro-organisms having penetrated the mass of the polyester by osmosis.
  • Hydrogen peroxide can be used for dechlorination, in other words to remove residual chlorine from your pool.

Main disadvantages of hydrogen peroxide:

  • It has low persistence: its effectiveness is significant and immediate, but its disinfection power then declines quite quickly.
  • Hydrogen peroxide disrupts the reading of the "chlorine" reagents for a few days (or even longer depending on the product). But this remains a negligible disadvantage compared to the major disadvantage of the accumulation of stabilizer in the pool.
  • Food-grade hydrogen peroxide for use in swimming pools and spas is still very difficult to obtain in Quebec and very few retailers carry it in stores.
