This process became popular when NASA used ionization to produce drinking water aboard Apollo in space in 1960. The ion generator used was the size of a matchbox. Due to the copper-silver ionization, drinking water could be produced in space without the use of chlorine.
Swimming pools and ponds
Copper-silver ionization is used as an alternative to chlorine disinfection. Chlorine usage can be reduced by 90%. However, another disinfectant must be added in addition to copper-silver. (Active oxygen is a more environmentally friendly disinfectant choice.) This is because copper-silver cannot remove organic matter, such as skin tissue, hair, and urine from swimming pool water. Due to its specific properties, copper-silver ionization is also highly recommended for disinfecting fish ponds since copper-silver is used to limit by-products created by chlorine disinfection, which are obviously harmful to flora and fauna.
Cooling towers
Water cooling towers require disinfection processes to prevent the growth of microorganisms. This can be achieved by combining copper-silver ionization and chlorine disinfection. The required chlorine concentrations are then significantly reduced.
Legionnaires' disease in hospitals
In England, copper-silver ionization is used in about 120 hospitals effectively for the disinfection of Legionella bacteria. The main source of Legionnaires' disease is hot water systems. Contagion occurs primarily through steam from showers. Copper-silver ionization kills the Legionnaires' disease bacteria.
Water intended for consumption
Copper-silver ionization is used by water bottling and recycling companies across the United States as an alternative to chlorine disinfection. A family-sized water ionizer is also readily available for home use. Ionized water has helped millions of people combat conditions such as arthritis, digestive problems, inflammatory problems, skin disorders, weight problems, diabetes, cancer, acid reflux, gout, fatigue, allergies, and chronic pain.
